What is so special about merino wool?

Merino wool yarn comes from Merino sheep, a breed known for its incredibly soft and fine fleece. Originally from Spain, these sheep produce wool that’s both warm and breathable, making it perfect for all kinds of projects.

Merino wool yarn is a top choice for knitting and crochet for many reasons:

  1. Soft & gentle – Merino wool is one of the softest natural fibers, making it perfect for clothing worn close to the skin. It’s ideal for baby garments, blankets, and anyone with sensitive skin.
  2. Warm but breathable – It keeps you cozy in the cold but won’t make you overheat, as it naturally regulates body temperature.
  3. Durable & long-lasting – Merino yarn resists pilling, holds its shape well, and stays beautiful even after multiple washes.
  4. Rich, vibrant colors – Merino wool absorbs dye well, meaning you’ll find it in a stunning variety of shades, from soft neutrals to bold, vibrant hues.
  5. Versatile for any project – Whether you’re making delicate lace shawls, cozy sweaters, or knits, Merino yarn adapts beautifully to different styles and techniques.

You can easily pair your Merino yarn with the perfect needles! At Knit&Note, we offer a selection of high-quality knitting needles to suit any project.

Take care of your merino wool creation

To keep your merino wool piece soft, beautiful, and long-lasting, follow these care tips:

  1. Washing: Machine wash on a maximum 30°C wool program. Avoid harsh detergents, use a wool wash to prevent damage.
  2. Drying: Never wring out. Gently press out excess water with a towel and lay flat to dry.
  3. Storing: Store lying flat instead of hanging. Hanging can distort the shape. Store in a cotton bag together with cedar wood to keep moths away. You're not the only one who loves merino wool!
  4. Removing wrinkles & pills: Steam instead of ironing. A steamer freshens up your piece without damage. Use a wool comb to remove knots.

Frequently asked questions

How much merino wool yarn do I need to make a blanket?

The amount of merino wool yarn you need for a blanket depends on the size, yarn weight, and stitch pattern you choose.

  • A baby blanket (around 75x100 cm / 30x40 inches) typically requires 600-1800 meters (650-1960 yards) of merino yarn, depending on the thickness.
  • A throw-sized blanket (about 125x150 cm / 50x60 inches) usually needs 1200-4000 meters (1310-4375 yards).
  • A large blanket (around 150x200 cm / 60x80 inches) can take anywhere from 2000 to 8000 meters (2200-8750 yards) of merino yarn.

Is 100% merino wool itchy?

Merino wool is one of the least itchy types of wool. Its fine, smooth fibers prevent scratching and provide a comfortable feel against the skin, even for those with sensitivities.

Why doesn't merino wool smell?

Wool garments and textiles naturally resist odors thanks to the unique properties of wool fibers. They can absorb significant amounts of moisture. Twice as much as cotton and thirty times more than polyester – keeping the skin dry and reducing the buildup of sweat and bacteria.
